The win lifted Calvert Hall, ranked No. 7 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits North America Rankings, to 6-0. La Salle, the defending Pennsylvania state champion, was making its debut.
Cardinals junior Timmy Kelly continues to have a huge first month of the season as the attackman tallied a game-high four goals.
La Salle, which lost a large cast from a team ranked among the nation’s top clubs, started slowly but kept the game close in the second half.
Calvert Hall didn’t score until the 5:36 mark of the first period when senior Andrew Fanshaw went on a three-goal spree in a one-minute span to put the Cardinals up 3-0.
Then Kelly punched in back-to-back goals in the second to make it 5-0, and followed up with two more in the third to put Calvert Hall in cruise control mode.
“Every game is important for us experience wise this was a big game,” said Calvert Hall head coach Bryan Kelly. “We have Trinity Pawling on Monday (3/24) and then Friday (3/28) against Conestoga coming up under the lights so we are excited (for this win).”
La Salle’s Stephen Hudak had a two goal night for the Explorers, but the Calvert Hall defense locked down and closed off any lanes for La Salle’s dodges.
Goalie Joe McSorley had an 8 save game for the Cardinals.
“The defense really stepped up and didn’t give up much shots and the shots they did give up were mostly outside (the box) so it was a good game all around,” said the sophomore netminder.
Colin MacDougall had 10 saves for La Salle.
Note: Fanshaw went out with an injury in the third quarter and didn’t return. It appeared he dislocated his shoulder as he had his arm in a sling. “I don’t know what the deal is I think he hurt his shoulder, we will see,” said Kelly.
