Boys’ game story: Episcopal Academy (PA) is denied Inter-Ac League title by Haverford School

NEWTOWN, Pa. – Haverford School (PA) went on a stunning 6-0 run in the final 8:13 of the game and claimed an 11-6 victory today over host Episcopal Academy (PA), denying the Churchmen their first Inter-Ac League crown in 15 years.

The loss dropped EA (14-5, ranked No. 11 by TopLaxRecruits.com) to 8-2 in the league. No. 7 Malvern Prep, which routed Germantown Academy, 16-3, today, earned the title outright with an 8-1 record.

Episcopal Academy took a 6-5 lead in the back-and-forth game when Dutch Buckley (two goals) scored with 10:53 to play.

But the Fords (12-7, 6-3) then took complete control of the game. Gavin McBride (two goals) tied it with 8:13 to go and freshman Brendan O’Neill (three goals) put Haverford ahead less than two minutes later.

Then it was Grant Ament (two goals, three assists) at 5:38, Drew Supinski (two goals) at 4:37, Supinski again at 2:54 and Ament again at 1:18.

“We came in with nothing to lose and we just wanted to play free and play the way we know we can play,” said Supinski, a sophomore midfielder. “We are a young team, nut we can beat anyone.”

Fords coach John Nostrant has praised his youthful team all year for its efforts in losses to many highly-ranked teams; today his patience was rewarded.

“We grew up a lot today,” he said. “It was never about them (the Churchmen’s title hopes); we have just been trying to get better.

“We didn’t have much to play for other than pride and the built up tradition for many years.”

EA coach Andy Hayes expressed disappointment that his club – which was in first place along until falling to Malvern Prep last Friday – was unable to win its first title since 1998.

He mentioned a critical goal allowed with 1:12 left in the third period by O’Neill and a goal by freshman Dox Aitken to open the fourth period for the Fords as the start of the momentum change.

“The loss is devestating,” he said. “I feel terrible for our seniors; they worked extremely hard.”

What was his post-game pep talk?

“I told them they had worked so hard and that it’s disappointing that it didn’t happen,” he said. “But I also told them that Monday is the start of a new season and we definitely need to defend our (Inter-Ac Invitational) title.”
