MINEOLA, N.Y. – James Roberts scored three goals, and keyed a 5-0 run that helped host Chaminade (N.Y.) claim a 10-6 victory today over visiting St. Anthony’s in a CHSAA contest.

“This is a great win,” said Chaminade head coach Jack Moran. “This is one of the best rivalries in the country. St. Anthony’s is a great program.”
St. Anthony’s has won the last four CHSAA championships over Chaminade, the last three in games decided by two goals or less. The regular season matchups take on a playoff-type atmosphere; this one was no different as the Flyers (5-0, 2-0), ranked No. 2 by TopLaxrecruits.com – took Game 1 over the No. 17 Friars (4-2, 3-1).
The teams may not like each other, but they sure respect each other.
“We were fortunate to have one four minute segment where we scored five goals and St. Anthony’s kept playing hard,” said Moran. “But we never allowed them to get their run or we would still be playing right now. They are a great team and any time you beat a great team you have to be happy.”
A big reason St. Anthony’s couldn’t get its run was because they couldn’t get past Chaminade’s senior goalie Dan Fowler (Duke), who had nine saves and was clutch when it was needed.
The Flyers seized an 8-3 halftime lead as Ryan Luckacovic had two goals and one assist and Tom Zenker scored two goals for Chaminade.
“This was a good win for us,” said Fowler, “Our offense was gelling really early, we were playing real well. Defensively, we had a few slip ups in the beginning, but then we played real solid.”
St. Anthony’s took a 2-1 lead to start the game, but Chaminade used the 5-0 run to take control. Greg Galligan scored three goals and Matt Koerner scored one goal and had two assists for St. Anthony’s.
“These programs bring out the best in each other,” said St. Anthony’s head coach Keith Wieczorek. “Chaminade is an excellent program.
“They are one of the best teams in the country this year so I’m proud of our effort and we will see them again in a few weeks.”
